In brief: job postings show what employers search for, not the whole job. For Forward Deployed Engineers, workflow management appears in more postings than software engineering itself. Mapped to the Council’s 11 draft domains, postings give a clear signal for eight domains and no direct signal for three: evaluation, security and field learning.
Which skills appear most in Forward Deployed Engineer job postings?
Artificial intelligence is the most requested skill in Forward Deployed Engineer job postings, followed by Python and workflow management. The table shows every skill in Lightcast’s chart. A posting can list many skills, so the percentages add up to more than 100.
| Rank | Skill | Postings | Share of postings | Lightcast skill type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Artificial intelligence | 5,378 | 70% | Specialized |
| 2 | Python | 4,369 | 57% | Software |
| 3 | Workflow management | 3,899 | 51% | Specialized |
| 4 | Software engineering | 3,649 | 48% | Specialized |
| 5 | Communication | 3,459 | 45% | Common |
| 6 | Computer science | 3,230 | 42% | Specialized |
| 7 | Problem solving | 3,061 | 40% | Common |
| 8 | Application programming interface (API) | 2,922 | 38% | Software |
| 9 | Machine learning | 2,790 | 36% | Specialized |
| 10 | Scalability | 2,485 | 32% | Specialized |
| 11 | Amazon Web Services | 2,364 | 31% | Software |
| 12 | Microsoft Azure | 2,280 | 30% | Software |
| 13 | TypeScript | 2,224 | 29% | Software |
| 14 | Pipelines | 2,139 | 28% | Specialized |
| 15 | JavaScript | 2,054 | 27% | Software |
| 16 | Artificial intelligence infrastructure | 2,012 | 26% | Specialized |
| 17 | Leadership | 1,940 | 25% | Common |
Read this table with three limits in mind. Lightcast does not state the chart’s date range, geography or total. Its figures imply a base of about 7,700 postings, which is the Council’s calculation (5,378 divided by 70%), not a Lightcast number. The chart is titled top 20 but shows 17 rows, so three skills are not visible (Lightcast, September 15, 2026).
The role is also new. Lightcast counts about 200 US FDE postings in 2024, around 1,200 in 2025 and more than 5,200 in the first seven months of 2026. It adds that demand “remains small compared with established technology occupations.”
Why does workflow management rank above software engineering?
Workflow management ranks high because employers want Forward Deployed Engineers to change how work gets done, not only to ship code. Lightcast describes the role as combining “engineering with AI implementation, workflow design and direct customer problem solving.”
Paul Farnsworth, president of the tech career platform Dice, put the same idea as a question in Fortune: “Can you walk into an ambiguous situation, understand how a workflow actually operates, communicate with technical and nontechnical stakeholders and build something that creates a measurable result?” (Fortune, September 3, 2026).
One caution applies. Lightcast does not define the label in its article, and a skill tag can cover workflow tools as well as workflow redesign. The 51% figure shows how often the term appears. It does not show which meaning an employer intends.
How do FDE skills differ from software engineer skills?
Forward Deployed Engineer postings put more weight on AI, workflow management and Python, while software engineer postings put more weight on computer science, Agile methodology and software development. Lightcast reports that three of the five most requested skills differ between the two roles. AI and workflow management do not appear in the top 20 for software engineers. Agile methodology and software development do not appear in the top 20 for FDEs.
Computer science shows the shift most clearly. It is the second most requested skill for software engineers and the sixth for FDEs. Our role comparison covers how the jobs differ in ownership, pay and demand.
Do other datasets show the same skills?
Other Forward Deployed Engineer posting data shows the same broad pattern, with different numbers. Bloomberry analyzed 1,000 FDE postings supplied by the jobs data provider Revealera (Bloomberry, published November 18, 2025, updated January 25, 2026). Python comes first among technologies in both datasets, and AWS comes first among cloud platforms.
| Skill | Lightcast (published September 2026) | Bloomberry (updated January 2026; n=1,000) |
|---|---|---|
| Python | 57% | 66.2% |
| TypeScript | 29% | 35.2% |
| JavaScript | 27% | 20.5% |
| Amazon Web Services | 31% | 31.7% |
| Microsoft Azure | 30% | 18.1% |
| Communication | 45% | 30% |
| Problem solving | 40% | 30% |
| Leadership | 25% | 21% |
The two sets are not directly comparable. They use different samples and skill labels. Bloomberry does not state its sample window, and it states a base for only some of its figures. It says its analysis focuses on hands-on “Builder” FDE roles, and it is the older of the two.
AI skills need the most care. Lightcast’s 70% is a broad label. Bloomberry counts narrower terms: AI agents at 35%, LLMs at 31% and RAG at 12%. Adaptability (39%) and collaboration (34%) lead Bloomberry’s soft skills but are not among the 17 skills Lightcast shows.
What do postings say about the work itself?
Working directly with customers is the most common responsibility in Forward Deployed Engineer postings, at 55% in Bloomberry’s analysis. Building and deploying AI or machine learning systems follows at 37%, then integrating systems and APIs at 32%. Deploying to production appears in 28% and gathering requirements in 27%.
Deploying to production appears about three times as often as building prototypes and proofs of concept (8.9%). That fits the Council’s definition: FDEs are measured by production outcomes, not demos or hours. Writing documentation appears in only 11.6%.
How do posting skills map to the 11 FDE domains?
Posting skills give a signal for eight of the 11 core domains in the FDE Council Professional Capability Framework, draft v0.2. The mapping below is the Council’s interpretation, not a finding from either dataset. A domain’s signal is strong if its highest figure is 40% or more, and moderate if it is 25% to 39%.
| Core domain | Closest signals in postings | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Discovery and problem framing | Problem solving 40% (L); gathering requirements 27% (B) | Strong |
| 2. Workflow design and value definition | Workflow management 51% (L) | Strong |
| 3. Solution architecture and enterprise integration | APIs 38% (L); integrating systems and APIs 32% (B) | Moderate |
| 4. Data foundations and engineering | Pipelines 28% (L); SQL 17.7% (B) | Moderate |
| 5. Software engineering and rapid experimentation | Python 57%, software engineering 48%, TypeScript 29% (L) | Strong |
| 6. Verification, evaluation and outcome measurement | None visible | None |
| 7. Production deployment, reliability and operations | Scalability 32%, AWS 31%, Azure 30% (L); deploying to production 28% (B) | Moderate |
| 8. Security, privacy, safety and governance | None visible | None |
| 9. Embedded collaboration, trust and adoption | Working directly with customers 55% (B); communication 45% (L) | Strong |
| 10. Delivery and commercial judgment | Lead technical implementations 28% (B) | Moderate |
| 11. Field learning, product feedback and reuse | None visible | None |
AI (70%) and machine learning (36%) are not assigned to one domain because they run across several, from software engineering to evaluation and deployment.
What do FDE job postings leave out?
Forward Deployed Engineer postings in these datasets show no direct signal for evaluation, security or field learning. That does not mean employers can do without them. A job posting lists what an employer searches for. A framework describes what the work requires.
There are likely reasons for the gap, though the data does not prove them. Three of Lightcast’s top 20 rows are not visible. Skill tags capture named tools more easily than practices such as running evaluations. Employers may also treat some duties as assumed. The FDE delivery lifecycle shows where this work happens, including the handover and feedback stages that postings rarely name.
How should you read the skills list in an FDE job posting?
Treat the skills list in a Forward Deployed Engineer posting as a starting point, then ask what each term means in the actual job. Five questions help:
- What does “AI” mean here? Ask whether the role builds with models, evaluates them or only uses AI tools.
- What does “workflow” mean here? Redesigning how people work is a different job from configuring an automation tool.
- Who owns the result after launch? Look for a named production outcome, not only a list of technologies.
- Are evaluation and security mentioned? If the system touches sensitive data or real decisions and the posting is silent, ask who owns them.
- What does the customer keep? Runbooks, evaluation assets and a named owner show that handover is part of the job.
Employers can use the same questions to write clearer postings. The Council’s guide to assessing FDE skills shows how to turn them into a consistent interview process. Practitioners can compare their experience with all 11 domains in the free FDE self-assessment.
The framework is a public draft, open for comment. It has not been validated through a formal job task analysis and is not a hiring test, certification or credential. There is no FDE certification yet.
Frequently asked questions
Is Python required for Forward Deployed Engineer jobs?
Not always, but it is the most requested programming language. Lightcast shows Python in 57% of FDE postings and Bloomberry in 66.2%.
Do FDE job postings ask for LLM or AI agent experience?
Often. Lightcast shows the broad artificial intelligence label in 70% of FDE postings. Bloomberry, using narrower terms, reports AI agents at 35%, LLMs at 31% and RAG at 12%.
Which cloud platform do FDE job postings ask for most?
Amazon Web Services comes first in both datasets. Lightcast shows AWS at 31% and Microsoft Azure at 30%. Bloomberry shows AWS at 31.7%, Google Cloud at 21.5% and Azure at 18.1%.
Do FDE job postings ask for customer skills?
Yes. Working directly with customers is the top responsibility in Bloomberry’s analysis, at 55%. Lightcast shows communication in 45% of postings.
Can a job posting show whether someone is a competent FDE?
No. A posting shows what an employer asks for, not what a person can do. Competence needs evidence from real work, assessed against the responsibilities of the actual role.
