Where do you stand as a Forward Deployed Engineer?
Rate yourself against the 11 core domains of the open FDE capability framework. You’ll see your overall level, where you’re strongest and the three areas to practise first, with concrete exercises for each.
The self-assessment needs JavaScript. You can still read the 11 core domains and the level descriptions in the framework.
How it works
- 22 short questions, two for each core domain.
- Each answer describes what you actually do, mapped to the framework’s levels: Associate, Practitioner and Lead. Choose the one that best describes your usual work, not your best day.
- Your answers stay in your browser. Nothing is sent to us.
You have an assessment in progress.
Your practice plan is built around the gap to this level.
Please answer both questions to continue.
Overall level:
- You
- Your target level
- Rings, from the centre outwards: Associate, Practitioner, Lead. Numbers are domains.

About this self-assessment
It’s built on the FDE Council Professional Capability Framework v0.2, a draft open for comment. The framework says every FDE should develop capability in all 11 core domains, with independence and depth increasing with experience. Levels describe scope and behaviour, not years of experience.
Your overall level is the highest level you reach in at least 8 of the 11 domains. Each domain’s level is the average of its two answers.
This is a self-reflection tool, not a credential, test or hiring instrument. It hasn’t yet been validated through a job task analysis, and self-ratings are only a starting point. You’ll get the most from it by discussing your result with a manager, mentor or peer. Employers can use the domains for structured hiring: see How should employers assess FDE skills?
Think a question or answer option is wrong? Tell us. Feedback on the wording helps shape the next draft.
